Session Description: This presentation will outline the rapidly changing culture of cannabis use highlighting potency and routes of administration, perception of risk, and common exchanges regarding substance use. It will share popular marketing campaigns targeted to a variety of populations. It will review public health concerns including increases in adolescent use, vaping, exacerbation of mental health problems, psychosis, health concerns of using during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and increase in cannabis use disorder and dependence. We will identify new trends in use, potency, products, and marketing practices; discuss the impact of cannabis use on physical and mental health; describe how the legalization of recreational cannabis has influenced public health, perception and consumption and review current research pertaining to addiction, intelligence / academic success, and parenting and effective ways to communicate use deterrence. Overall, it will provide information to have an intelligent “cannabis conversation.”
