Wendy Wade, PhD, LPCC and CADC 1, began facilitating educational support groups with children of parental addiction in the 1980s at Kids Are Special. After elementary school teacher and principal positions, she provided similar educational support groups for children and caregivers at Betty Ford Center. She served locally on a Prevent Child Abuse Committee. Next position was at inpatient case manager/counselor and family program coordinator at Beacon House treatment center. She has trained professionals, including teachers, and presented at addiction and counseling conferences about the difficulties and resiliencies children of parents with addiction face. She trains for the National Association of Children of Addiction (NACoA). She is Professor of MA Counseling at Palo Alto University, and lead teacher for the Addiction Counseling Course. She was employed at Santa Cruz Co. Children’s Mental Health, working with children with IEPs having behavioral difficulties and their families. She volunteered as counselor bi-monthly at Camp Mariposa weekend camp in San Diego for several years, providing educational groups and counseling for children of parental substance use disorder.
