Clinical Coordinator - North Central Region Community Medical Services Fargo, North Dakota
Session Description: As we strengthen the power of collaboration among healthcare systems, judicial systems, government and policy makers, social services, and treatment providers we cannot neglect the most important component: the individual we are helping. Building collaboration as the individual is involved between different systems, services, and organizations is important. But, what about the collaboration with the patient while they are in our services? Patient progress is frequently measured and viewed based on their engagement in services. While these services hold weight to accomplishing treatment goals, they do not show the individual’s entire journey and most notably opportunities to collaborate with them. Community Medical Services has implemented “Patient Engagement” that has become the road we use to meet patients along their journey. We will be reviewing the research on patient engagement and the impact it is having on treatment. These documented efforts help gain a better view of the individual and therefore provide improved quality of care. Attendees will also be able to learn ways to engage with participants in ways to help them participate and attend in other services. Patient engagement will also provide opportunities for professionals to measure and observe changes in individuals that can lead to better and improved outcomes. Engagement with individuals in treatment can also lead to better retention.
Learning Objectives:
After this activity participants should be able to
Describe and list how some interactions with individuals in treatment have been overlooked and even discouraged as part of their treatment.
Learn about how Community Medical Services has defined implemented patient engagement to patients in treatment for Opioid Use Disorder with the use of medication for opioids and behavioral services.
Review some of the research behind patient engagement and the impact on treatment and retention and identify ways to incorporate patient engagement in current treatment programs.
